Attard 1

Melita 5

The final score is a clear indication that the Amateurs had a very easy task against Attard.

Melita are now joint leaders with San Gwann on 34 points from 14 games while Attard are in penultimate position on seven points from 13 games.

The game was only two minutes old when Melita opened the score. Antoine Attard was fouled on the left flank and as Aiden Mizzi floated a perfect ball in the area from the free kick, Isaac Curmi headed in past Attard keeper Jean P. Deguara.

In another Melita action, Curmi released Jeremy Mousu’ on the right flank and the ball missed the upright after his effort from the edge of the area.

Attard then mounted their first action as Luke Bugeja released Andre’ Fenech on the right flank who then crossed the ball in the area but found no takers.

In the 17th minute Mousu’ should have doubled for Melita but he drove over the bar when well-placed in the area after a Ryan Spiteri perfect through ball.

At the other end, Fenech served Robert Muscat in the area and Melita keeper Philip Schranz foiled him with a timely sortie.

In the 19th minute Melita doubled the score. Attard dribbled past an opponent on the left flank and crossed to Curmi in the area who netted with a low shot.

Melita kept pressing and Paul Muscat went close to scoring as he tried his luck from outside the area.

Attard reduced the gap in the 29th minute. Jean C. Cuschieri was fouled outside the area, and after Schranz partly saved the free kick by Kurt Agius, Bugeja was on hand to score from the rebound.

The score became 3-1 in the 31st minute. From a well-taken flag kick by Muscat the ball was partly cleared and Neil Bonello scored with a hard drive from the rebound.

Five minutes before the interval Deguara denied Melita a fourth goal as he tipped the ball over the bar after a well-taken free kick by Malcolm Gatt Baldacchino from midfield.

The second period was less action-packed and the first action worthy of note was created in the 52nd minute when Curmi served substitute Nathan Sammut with a square pass and he drove over the bar from outside the area.

In the 54th minute the score became 4-1 when Curmi served Attard with a through ball outside the area and he scored with a hard grounder.

The pressing by Melita was incessant as they created all the actions up to the final whistle. Curmi served Attard in the area and with only Deguara to beat he skied the ball over the bar.

Spiteri was then fouled on the left edge of the area and from the free kick by the same player, the ball whizzed past the near post.

Melita scored their fifth goal in the 69th minute when Curmi was fouled on the left edge of the area and the same player scored with a rising shot past a helpless Deguara.

In the last action before the end, from a corner kick by Attard, the ball was cleared to another corner.
